- DOOMENU (c) 1994 v1.0 -1-
- by Keith Cooper
-
- Thank you for trying DOOMENU. My intention was to create
- an easy to use interface to take advantage of the great
- developer tools within the game DOOM (c).
-
- There should be four files included in the SFX zip file
- DOOMMENU.EXE:
-
- DOOMENU.EXE >executable
- DOOMENU.PIC >menu screen
- DOOMENU.TXT >this file
- DOOMENU.CFG >setup\config file
-
- The DOOMENU.CFG file is an editable ascii text file that
- supplies needed information to run DOOMENU. In the first
- line, it tells DOOMENU how many games you have saved by
- the use of the record demo mode. (R from Doomenu)
-
- The next twenty lines hold places for up to twenty saved
- games. From top to bottom the saved games are listed in
- order. If a line doesn't have a game name saved there,
-
- -2-
- then it will have a dash (-) instead. Anything besides a
- dash will be treated as a saved game title. The last 3
- lines of the DOOMENU.CFG file are for displaying the
- name of text or graphic programs used by DOOMENU. You
- can also enter your favorite ones. (see F3 key: SETUP)
-
- When you start DOOMENU, you see the main menu screen.
- Pick and press the letter to the left of the option
- you want to execute. i.e. P> PLAY DOOM ; pressing P
- will load DOOM as if you typed DOOM from the DOS prompt.
-
- F1 key: HELP\CAPTURE SCREEN
- Through most menu screens, you'll see option buttons on
- the right side of DOOMENU. F1,F2 and F3. If they are not
- there, you can't access them at that time (i.e. while
- viewing the list of saved games)
- F1 will display quick help screens. You use the up and down
- arrows to page through the text.
- When you are playing DOOM, as you might know, F1 brings up
- an onformation screen, pressing it again will bring up help
- for DOOM. But when you are in DEVELOPER MODES, (i.e."Start
- DOOM at level?", "Recording save game", "Playing back saved
- game") Then the F1 key can be used to capture a screen in
- -3-
- PCX format. Every time press it, the current screen will
- be saved in the DOOM directory. These pictures must be
- deleted manually. And you can view them easily using DOOMENU.
-
- F2 key: PAYING THE PIPER
- While running DOOMENU, F2 key brings up the most extraordinary
- information you will ever see in your life. If you run it,
- you'll certainly want a pen and paper ready in case it never
- comes up again. I can't tell you any more about it but wield
- it's power carefully.
-
- F3 key: SETUP
- F3 in DOOMENU, rewrites the configuration file (DOOMENU.CFG)
- to update your graphic and text viewers. I have been using
- CSHOW (Available almost everywhere and of course, Compuserve
- is the surest place to get the latest copy...it's theirs)
- CompuShow shows the saved screens in their original palette.
- Something some others can't do. You can choose the listed
- suggested ones or type in your own. If you don't know what
- the command line should look like to view all PCX's and GIF's,
- then refer to the programs own help screens or files.
- Afterwards it will prompt you to put in the path to find the
- graphic viewer. Enter if you have it in the DOOM directory
- -4-
- (leaving it blank). Since CSHOW has many files (and will put
- up a delayed warning screen if it can't find them all) I keep
- them in a separate directory. If your viewer is one file (i.e.
- PICEM, then you can put it into the DOOM directory and leave
- the pathing blank.
- Next it will ask you for a text viewer. Any one will do, but
- it needs to be in the DOOM dir or in your path structure. If
- DOS is in your path then EDIT or TYPE will work fine. If you use
- BROWSE or README, etc., rename it to LIST (or edit DOOMENU.CFG)
-
- RECORD GAMES
- If you are recording a game and it runs out of space or time,
- then DOOM dumps you back to the menu. It will not save the game,
- and it will still be on the viewer list in DOOMENU. You can
- remedy this by using a text editor such as DOS edit, and editing
- DOOMENU.CFG. Find the game that is errant and replace the name
- a dash. Then on the very first line, change the number to one
- less than it says. (i.e. line one says 9, make it an 8 because
- you just took a game off the list.) Also DO NOT leave blank
- (-'s) BETWEEN game names in DOOMENU.CFG. When DOOMENU sees the
- first dash on the list it stops looking. So if you take a name
- off the list in DOOMENU.CFG from the middle, you can easily
- just delete the line and add a dash line at the end of the dash
- -5-
- lines (but before the last three path\program lines of the file)
-
- START ANY LEVEL
- You can warp to any level and any danger level by using this
- funtion. It will put you in developer mode which means you
- can take PCX snap shots anytime while you are playing.
-
- EXAMINE SCREEN SHOTS
- This uses your graphic viewer to show any PCX files in the DOOM
- directory.
-
- VIEW CHEAT DOCS
- There is a file available that lists all the cheat key modes
- you can use while you play DOOM. The latest I have is DOOMCHT3.DOC
- This is where I got the information to write this interface.
- If you get another version, either rename it DOOMCHT?.DOC
- or edit the DOOMENU.CFG file to the file name you want displayed.
- (DOOMENU looks for DOOMCHT*.DOC so DOOMCHT4 or DOOMCHT5 etc will
- be displayed as is setup.)
-
- VIEW MAPS
- There is also a ZIP file out there that has GIF's of each level
- map. Put the GIF files into the DOOM directory.
